Uninvited Guest Meets Louisiana Homeowner’s Bullet after Violent Attack
A home invasion in Louisiana saw a trespasser attacked a homeowner who confronted him. This took place in the 1200 block of Dove Park Road in Mandeville, which is located near New Orleans. The incident escalated when the intruder charged at a second homeowner who had fetched a firearm in response to the initial confrontation. The trespasser was subsequently shot by the second homeowner, according to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office.
The event unfolded at around 9 a.m. on July 29. Both homeowners promptly dialed 911 and investigators are currently leaning towards the argument that the shooting was in self-defense.
The alleged intruder was believed to be lurking in the homeowners’ garage. It is reported that the homeowners were not acquainted with the suspect. When the first homeowner approached the trespasser, he was physically assaulted, prompting cries for help to the second homeowner.
Despite pleas for the trespasser to cease his attack, the physical altercation continued. As the situation worsened, the second homeowner felt compelled to take charge with a firearm on hand.
The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office shared with WDSU-TV that the second homeowner tried to deescalate the situation. The person implored the suspect to stop his attack but it was to no avail. In the ensuing chaos, the trespasser lunged at the second homeowner, who in response, shot the suspect in the abdomen.
When deputies arrived at the scene, they discovered Careyunius Smith of Slidell with a gunshot wound to his abdomen. Smith was immediately transported to a hospital for surgery where he was stabilized.
The same homeowners who initially reported the invasion believed that their actions were in self-defense. This incident has sparked significant public discussion.
Smith was later charged for criminal trespassing, attempted simple kidnapping, simple battery, and simple assault. Following his recovery from the hospital, he will be directly transferred to jail.
The incident sparked plenty of chatter on WVUE’s Facebook page, with most commenters seeming to back the homeowners. One person wrote, “Try that in a small town,” whilst another user advised, “So maybe don’t step foot on a property that doesn’t belong to you.” One other commenter simply reacted with a “Haha,” and followed up stating, “This needs to happen more.”
