Fare Evasion Uncovers Loaded Shotgun on DC Metrobus
In Washington, D.C., a routine fare enforcement operation led to a significant discovery when a man was found carrying a loaded shotgun on a Metrobus. The incident underscores the ongoing efforts of the Metro Transit Police Department to maintain safety and order on public transportation.
Gerald Evans, a 30-year-old identified by FOX 5 DC, was apprehended by plain-clothes officers after allegedly boarding an X2 route bus without paying the fare. The incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. on a Tuesday morning. When officers approached Evans to issue a citation for fare evasion, he reportedly refused to provide identification, prompting his arrest.
During the arrest, officers discovered a loaded shotgun concealed under Evans’ coat. This unexpected find added a serious dimension to what began as a minor infraction. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority emphasized that Evans’ arrest was “an example of fare enforcement in action.”
Further investigation revealed that the shotgun in Evans’ possession had been reported stolen from Prince George’s County, Maryland. Additionally, Evans had an outstanding felony warrant for theft from Anne Arundel County, Maryland. These revelations highlight the complexities and potential dangers that law enforcement officers face during routine operations.
Evans now faces multiple charges, including possession of a prohibited weapon, carrying a dangerous weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of unregistered ammunition, fugitive from justice, and fare evasion.
The Metro Transit Authority’s decision to intensify fare enforcement came after reports that nearly 70% of bus riders were evading fares. This incident illustrates the broader challenges of maintaining security and compliance within public transit systems.
As the city grapples with issues of crime and safety, incidents like this serve as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and enforcement in keeping public spaces secure.
