Brave Bystander Thwarts Florida Carjacking with Laser-Pointed Gun
Earlier this month, a brazen carjacking attempt at a Florida gas station was foiled by the quick-thinking and courageous actions of a bystander. Marvette Perry, aged 36, was reported by the police to have tried to steal a car from a couple at an Exxon station in Ormond Beach. The targeted vehicle’s owner had parked to make use of the restroom facilities, but before he could step out of his car, Perry forcefully opened the door, shoved the man aside, and clambered into the driver’s seat.
Cue the timely intervention of Adam McDaniels, who was incidentally at the same gas station that day. Benefitting from both quick instincts and a preparedness mindset, McDaniels immediately registered the crime unfolding before him and sprang into action to stop Perry.
“I got out with my firearm,” recounted McDaniels in an interview with WESH-TV. “I ran over, pointed my firearm with a laser at her chest, and told her not to reach for any weapons.”
In realizing that Perry was not armed, McDaniels stowed away his firearm but continued to maintain a watchful presence. Notably, Perry remained immobile and silent, frozen in place by the sight of the laser pointed at her chest.
“As soon as she saw my laser on her chest, she stopped, became stone cold, didn’t move or speak,” McDaniels stated. “I tried to get her to get out of the car, but she didn’t do anything until the cops got there.”
During this tense standoff, the 74-year-old victim managed to keep hold of Perry’s foot, preventing her from driving away with the vehicle. Remarkably, the victim’s wife remained seated in the passenger seat throughout the ordeal.
“I think she was a little worked up, but he seemed pretty calm. He held her by the ankle and said he wouldn’t let go,” McDaniels shared.
Reflecting on his brave intervention, McDaniels expressed gratitude that he was in a position to assist. “I come from a small town in North Carolina where people help each other. I just couldn’t sit there and watch that transpire in a different way.”
Following the incident, Perry was detained at the Volusia County Jail without bond. As reported by WKMG-TV, she now faces multiple charges, including carjacking, burglary with assault or battery, battery on a person 65 years of age or older, and resisting an officer without violence.
WESH-TV’s interview with McDaniels, as well as the police bodycam video capturing Perry’s arrest, can be viewed online.
