Jeweler With Military Background Uses Gun Knowledge Against Nighttime Bandit

Late on a recent Saturday night, Garrett Peddicord, owner and goldsmith at Sidrony Jewelers, was wrapping up his day when an unexpected guest made an appearance. Captured on his security monitor, a figure clad entirely in black had thrown a hefty rock through his shop’s front window. The time was around 11:30 p.m., and pieces of shattered glass now decorated the store’s floor as the unwelcome visitor made his entrance.

“There was a kind of shock, seeing that someone would attack what I’ve put so much effort into building,” Peddicord shared, revealing the emotional turmoil caused by such a violation.

A veteran with three years of military service in Afghanistan, Peddicord also owns Athena Arms, a firearms store in Bellevue. His experiences had equipped him with the necessary skills for such a situation. As he put it, he’s accustomed to having a firearm at his side, even when the shop is closed for the day.

“I usually have a gun on my hip, it’s simply routine,” he stated, metaphorically checking his pockets. “Keys, wallet, firearm.”

With this routine check complete, Peddicord drew his firearm and made his way towards the noise. He intentionally made his footsteps loud, warning the intruder of his approach, and coupling the sound with a shouted obscenity, the specifics of which we will leave to your imagination.

The reaction from the burglar was comical. Fright clearly painted across his face, he threw up his hands and beat a hasty, and rather delicate, retreat to the exit, leaping through the same broken window he’d entered through.

“That sort of unprovoked attack on what I’ve worked so hard to build here is pretty upsetting,” Peddicord reiterated, stating the pain caused by such an audacious act.

As for the firearm he carries, Peddicord considers it no different from the other tools he has in his workshop. “Each one serves a purpose,” he expressed, “but this is the one tool that I hope I’ll never have to use.”

At the time of reporting this incident, local law enforcement in Omaha had not confirmed whether the burglar had been apprehended.
