3-Year-Old Survives Two Days Alone in Montana Wilderness

In a recent incident that unfolded in the rural expanses of Troy, Lincoln County, Montana, a 3-year-old boy named Ryker Webb managed to survive two days alone in the wilderness. The young explorer had strayed over two miles from his family’s yard and was discovered taking refuge in a shed.

Ryker was found after a family in a nearby cabin heard faint whimpers emanating from their generator shed. Lincoln County Sheriff Darren Short, who was involved in the rescue operation, recounted the incident to TODAY.

“They heard a little boy’s voice from the shed out back where they keep a generator,” Short said. “So they went to the shed and there he was.”

Upon the arrival of the police, Sheriff Short found Ryker in a state of fright. “He was very, very scared,” he told the outlet. “He had the wide-eyed scared look until he got back to his mom and dad.”

Ryker’s ordeal involved two nights alone in the forested wilderness, where he was exposed to thunderstorms, dropping temperatures into the 40s, and the potential threat of mountain lions and bears. According to Sheriff Short, Ryker told the police that he had embarked on a long walk alone but became tired.

The search for the missing boy was a frantic two-day operation involving multiple agencies. Ground responders, ATV teams, canine teams, drones, helicopters, and a boat unit were all deployed in the search. However, the aerial search teams were forced to retreat due to “very poor weather conditions which consisted of rain, low visibility, and low ceiling,” as reported by the sheriff’s office.

Ryker was found unscathed but was “hungry, thirsty and cold.” He was taken to Cabinet Peaks Medical Center for evaluation and was subsequently released.

The incident is still under investigation by the sheriff’s department. Sheriff Short and his team are currently probing the circumstances surrounding Ryker’s disappearance, including why his parents waited two hours to report him missing.

“We’re still looking into why he disappeared, and why he wasn’t being watched closely,” Short said.
